What better way to spend quality time with your kids than building something together?! The kids benefit from learning valuable construction skills at an early age while the parent gets to remember how powerful and inspiring the imagination of a young child can be!

A good friend of mine has a son in Cub Scouts and recently mentioned to me that one of the requirements of the program is that the Scout must build a useful project out of wood. This sounded like a great excuse for a new Copewood design plan!

I knew this young man to be quite a prudent money manager for his age, so we came up with a Wooden Lock Box design that is simple enough that most of the assembly can be handled by the child (with adult supervision of course).

The great part is there are all sorts of way to personalize this project around your own child by finishing with their favorite paint color/stain, stenciling their name, adding all sorts of cool hardware and the list goes on!

Carson and I built a prototype which you can see featured below. For our build, we used poplar wood with a cherry stain and then used a wood burner to brand his name on top. Check out the plans below for step-by-step instructions as well as a full material list and cut list.

Time to go make some memories!
